- The stages of a Statistical Investigation
- Types of variables (discrete, continuous, dichotomous) and measurement scales (nominal, ordinal, interval, ration).
- Descriptive Statistics (measures of central tendency, measures of spread and statistical diagrams (histograms, bar charts, pie charts, box plots, etc)
- Probability (Discrete and Continuous)
- Survey methods (probability sampling techniques, non-probability sampling techniques, designing a questionnaire, sample size determination)
- An introduction to hypothesis testing – the Chi-Square test
- Correlation and Regression

The focus will not be on laborious calculations but on understanding the key concepts and principles of statistics with a special reference to tourism. Practical exercises and files containing data sets will be prepared to help participants learn interpret statistical output. Case studies should also provide an additional problem-solving experience and help participants to master essential data analytical skills.

Study-unit Aims

To help students of tourism studies master basic quantitative techniques and procedures used for gathering, organising, analysing and communicating quantitative information. The aim of the programme is to provide a structured approach to model building.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand the basic principles of research
- Read research data
- Understand tourism data

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
