DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to provide the student with an understanding of the basic concepts of enterprise as it applies to tourism. The unit is also designed to encourage the development of entrepreneurial skills together with a basic knowledge of soft skills management.

Study-unit Aims:

The tourism industry is part of the knowledge economy and therefore a visitor will seek out destinations and attractions that offer new and challenging experiences, at good value for money. To gain competitive advantage, owners and managers should have the skills to face up to the challenges of entrepreneurship, by articulating from an idea to reality, managing the operation on a daily basis, along holistic lines. The purpose of the course is to manage a project of a tourism company in the knowledge society.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define the concept of enterprise and explore tourism enterprise developments in their locality;
- Define the different forms of business organizations and the stages involved in setting up an enterprise, including possible sources of finance;
- Recognize the factors which may affect the successful development and operation of an enterprise, such as the application of (soft) management and business skills, visitor management procedures and frameworks;
- Describe management responsibilities in relation to the areas of activity of an enterprise;
- Identify the role played by public sector, community and trade bodies/organisations in the development of local tourism enterprises;
- Explain how tourism enterprises contribute to the economy of the local area in terms of employment, revenue, investment;
- Investigate opportunities for the development of tourism-related enterprises in a particular locality;
- Prepare a proposal for tourism related enterprise;
- Explain the functions of a feasibility study.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Carry out a SWOT analysis;
- Design a questionnaire and evaluate the results;
- Prepare an enterprise plan;
- Design a Business Model of a tourism company.
