DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce the student to innovation and its application the discipline of tourism. The Unit, which will be a series of lectures and hands on practical activity will highlight the application of the concepts of innovation as applied to product development, organisations and entrepreneurship. This unit will also highlight the importance of innovation for destination competitiveness.

Study-unit Aims

This study-unit which is based on lectures and seminars conducted by the students will challenge the idea that to be innovative once requires major breakthroughs. Very often innovation is something simple but effective.
Students following this study-unit will be asked to look at tourism and heritage institutions with a fresh eye and to identify ways how such organisations can retain their competitive advantage through innovation.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Define innovation
- Demonstrate how innovation can be related to entrepreneurship
- Relate innovation to competitiveness
- Challenge the status quo
- Identify the competitive advantage
- Transform normal business activities into innovative ideas

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Develop and use his / her creative abilities
- Think laterally
- Work in groups
- Present and defend their ideas
