TITLE Introduction to Tourism

DESCRIPTION - Introduction to the meaning and value of tourism, travel and culture and identification of the major source data of local and global key performance indicators.
- Introduction to Tourism as a prime example of the Experiential economy and society.
- Introduction to the History of Tourism both local and global.
- Introduction to a number of prime tourism demand generators and how these impact demand for travel and tourism.
- Introduction to the supply-side of travel and tourism and in particular transport and accommodation.
- Elementary demand forecasting techniques are introduced plus the need for tourism policy and planning.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit provides a solid foundation for higher level learning. It will further the breadth and the depth of the basic tourism principles as applied to micro- and macro-enterprises and the overall tourism industry.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will:
- Be able to take cognizance of the true meaning and significance of travel and tourism and its origins;
- Be able to appreciate the value of academic and professional analysis in travel and tourism as the only guarantee for sustainable tourism;
- Have an understanding of the History of Tourism both local and global;
- Have an awareness of prime tourism demand generators and how these impact demand for travel and tourism;
- Become acquainted with elementary demand forecasting techniques and tourism policy and planning.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Utilise academic skills and cognition and recognise areas of specialism interest to pursue in year 2 and 3 leading to increased prospects for related jobs in the industry;
- Apply own critical and creative skills and to source academic literature and basic academic research methods;
- Enhance his/her communication and networking skills, both being vital assets in a people industry;
- Enhance his/her presentation skills (both verbal and visual).
