DESCRIPTION This study-unit is a written assignment of the candidate's choice in the Diploma's subject-related areas, under the guidance of a supervisor. It would take a form of a long essay (approx. 5000 words). The long essay is intended to promote high-level research and writing skills, intellectual discovery and creativity. This leads to a major piece of formally presented, structured writing, in which ideas and findings are communicated in a reasoned and coherent manner, appropriate to the subject chosen.

The research process necessarily involves intellectual risk-taking and extensive reflections.

Study-unit Aims:

The candidates should be able to:
- Pursue independent research on a focused topic;
- Develop research and communication skills;
- Develop the skills of creative and critical thinking;
- Engage in a systematic process of research appropriate to the subject;
- Experience the excitement of intellectual discovery.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Engage in a systematic process of research using literature content appropriate to the subject;
- Understand and apply methods of research;
- Discuss current issues and trends in their area of knowledge.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Interpret a variety of sources of information such as secondary literature, official reports and statistical data;
- Apply acquired knowledge to answer a specific research question;
- Compare and contrast different practices and methods of production, preparation and consumption (students will be coached in deciding the relevant subject areas).
