| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will illustrate from a practical angle the creation and management of tourism projects. The aspects of EU-funded tourism projects, such as ERDF funded projects, will also be covered. The study-unit will also look at tools, such as impact assessment, needed to determine the benefits and costs of the projects. Students will also get the opportunity to work on tourism project concept ideas, and on aspects of an application for funding. Study-unit Aims: The aim of this study-unit is to introduce the students to tourism and heritage projects and to study how such projects (for example the covering of the Mnajdra and Hagar Qim Temples, or how rural development heritage and tourism projects are designed, funded and implemented). Students will be also looking at different funding bodies such as the Maltese Government Authorities, commercial banks, EU, UNESCO, World Bank and the Getty Foundation; how one can apply and write successful bids for these bodies. This study-unit is essential since more heritage, culture and tourism projects are being funded through such means. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Explain the project life cycle; - Map, and create a best 'fit' between concepts and actual work packages; - Define the different forms of funding; - Assess which forms of funding suit which particular project best; - Assess the impacts of a particular project on the built and natural environment. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Design successful tourism, culture and heritage projects; - Design project budgets; - Manage projects according to specific deadlines; - Solve problems that one may encounter during the project life cycle.
