DESCRIPTION City living is synonymous with civilization: the root of the word civilization is the Latin word 'civis', which means 'city'. This study-unit will look into the developments of urban life in different regions in order to understand the roots of urban culture, its meaning, its significance, its varieties. This investigation will combine the study of particular cities – how their structure evolved through time, their inhabitants, their social behaviour – with an extensive look at theories of what cities are and how they have shaped the mentalities of those who live there.

Is there an urban personality? Are cities zones of cultural and artistic dynamism? Do cities create freedom or restrictions on human life and action? What are the environmental impacts of cities? How do politics, religion, ethnicities, and other multi-cultural aspects impinge on city and urban life? What makes cities centres of culture? and, What are cities of culture?

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this unit is to give students a comparative and multi-disciplinary perspective into the origin and nature of urbanism through theoretical insights as well as specific case-studies of individual cities drawn from the Mediterranean region and beyond. Whenever possible students will also be encouraged to draw on material evidence from Malta and other locations they may be familiar with. The unit will also look at various cities of culture not least Valletta as City of Culture 2018 and see what and how these have become ECOC - European Cities of Culture.
