Rights and Remedies Conference 2012

The Jean Monnet Chair of European Law at the University of Malta is holding its third Rights and Remedies Conference on Friday 13 April 2012.
The theme of this year's one-day conference is 'Rights and Remedies for the Consumer in the European Union'. A panel of distinguished foreign speakers will discuss the following issues:
- Shopping on Online Auction Platforms: Rights and Remedies – Dr Christine Riefa, Brunel Law School, Brunel University
- Ways of Improving Consumer Redress for Unfair Contract Terms – Professor Christopher Willet and Dr Youseph Farah, School of Law, University of Essex
- Consumer Remedies for Faulty Goods – The Impossibility of Balancing the Interests of Consumers, Traders and Coherence of the Law – Professor Christian Twigg-Flesner, Law School, University of Hull
- Commission Proposal for a Common European Sales Law – Benefits for Consumers – Ms Mihaela Carpus-Carcea, DG Justice, European Commission
- EU Collective Redress and Consumer ADR - Professor Christopher Hodges, Centre for Socio-Legal Studies, University of Oxford and Erasmus Professor at Erasmus University, Rotterdam
- Redress for Consumers in Respect of Unfair Commercial Practices - Professor Geraint Howells, School of Law, University of Manchester
- Financial Services and Consumer Protection – Professor Dr Udo Reifner University of Hamburg
- Reviewing the Protection of the Tourist: Passengers' Rights and Package Travel only or a Tourist Services Directive? – Professor Dr Klaus Tonner University of Rostock, Germany and Judge at the Oberlandesgericht Rostock
Following the conference, a publication and a CD containing all the speakers' papers will be distributed to the participants free of charge. This project is funded with support from the European Commission.

Border Securities, Human Experiences

The Department of Civil Law in collaboration with the Institute of Criminology of the University of Malta and the US Embassy (Malta) is co-organising a conference entitled: Border Securities, Human Experiences. This conference will explore the experiential implications of the legal and political construction of borders and associated security practices with a particular focus on migrants in the Mediterranean region.
Keynote speeches will be delivered by Professor Maurizio Albahari of the University of Notre Dame, who has researched the situation in Lampedusa and Professor Terence Coonan, Director of the Human Rights Institute of the State University of Florida. The conference will be held in the Oracle Conference Centre of the New Dolmen Hotel in Qawra on Friday 28 October between 0900hrs and 1700hrs.

Symposium on Jurisprudence of the Family

The International Academy of the Jurisprudence of the Family will be holding a Symposium focusing on Parenting on the 15th and 16 July 2011 at the Aula Magna University of Malta, Valletta campus.
Dr Farrugia is inviting 3-4 students to contribute to this event by helping to provide logistical support. This will be a wonderful opportunity to meet and listen to many key academics in the field of family law and might even inspire or help in the proposed dissertation and future career.

The Jean Monnet Chair at the University of Malta in collaboration with the Assoċjazzjoni Maltija Għall-Istudji Tad-Dritt Ewropew (AMSDE) is holding its second Rights and Remedies Conference on Thursday 15 September 2011 at the Corinthia Hotel St George's Bay, St Julians.
The theme of this year’s one-day conference is 'Rights and Remedies in a Liberalised and Competitive Internal Market'. A panel of distinguished foreign and local speakers will discuss the following issues from an EU and Maltese perspective:
• Remedies against anti-competitive practices – the role of public enforcers and private remedies
• Human rights protection in the context of competition proceedings
• Protection against anti-competitive state action
• Remedies for a competitive market in the communications and energy sectors
• Sports media rights and exclusivity
Following the conference a publication and a CD containing all the conference papers will be distributed to the participants free of charge. This project is funded with support from the European Commission.
