About us

The Faculty of Laws, one of the oldest faculties of UM, is a leading provider of legal education in Malta.

The Faculty of Laws is renowned for its practical and professionally relevant approach to learning and teaching across a range of taught courses ranging from undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and research degrees. Within the Maltese legal system we perform an indispensable function, being the only institution in Malta authorised to award degrees that are required in order to qualify as an advocate, notary public and legal procurator in Malta. Moreover our Faculty serves as the national focal point for research and scholarship concerning Maltese Law.

The Maltese legal system is defined as a 'mixed' legal system, which blends common and civil law elements. This characteristic, which derives from Malta’s historical vicissitudes and which has now acquired a new emphasis with European Union membership, is the source of one of our greatest strengths.

The training it gives to students equips them to cope with and bridge the divide between the common and civil law family of legal systems. In fact, our graduates have an equal familiarity with the leading classics of civilian jurisprudence and with the latest textbooks in English common law, an important asset in an age of globalisation.

Our Faculty is made up of nine departments dealing respectively with Civil, Commercial, Criminal, International, Public, European and Comparative Law, Media, Communications and Technology Law, Environmental and Resources Law and Legal History and Legal Research Methods, with over 1,000 students.

The Bachelor of Laws Honours (LL.B. (Hons)) course is an undergraduate degree in Law, which offers you an exciting and dynamic educational experience, while also providing you with the core subjects required by professional legal bodies. Our Bachelor of Laws Honours (LL.B. (Hons.)) course equips students to read for a range of postgraduate courses, primarily at the Masters level that reflect areas of expertise in the fields of European Law, Public International Law, Financial Services, Mediation, Human Rights, Advocacy and Notarial Studies.
