TITLE History of Police Law: The British Period 1814 -1964

DESCRIPTION The study-unit is designed to introduce the student to the historico-legal aspect of Police Legislation during the British Period (1814-1964). It will provide an understanding of the main legislation governing the Malta Police Force during the period under review.

Included among the substantive subjects which form the framework for discussion and the ways in and the extent to which legislation enacted during the British era impacted on the ways the Malta Police functioned as a guarantor of the maintenance of public order and peace for the mother country.

Study-unit Aims:

The educational aims of this study-unit are:
(a) to present a comprehensive overview of the main legislation enacted during the British period as regards the Malta Police Corps;
(b) to analyse the law in context; and
(c) to critically appreciate the concepts of legislation enacted in specific periods and their impact on the role of the police in Malta.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
(a) describe the landmark periods in the development of police legislation in Malta;
(b) review critically the relationship between the police and Maltese socierty as a result of legislation enacted;
(c) discuss the development of the role of police officers and policing style of today as a result of the different legislation enacted throughout the period under review.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
(a) write on the history of the Police Force between the period 1814-1964;
(b) write on the laws regulating the Police Force during the period 1814-1964;
(c) identify the salient case law in which the Police Force was involved as a party to criminal proceedings.
