TITLE Basic Concepts Related to Industrial Law

DESCRIPTION The study-unit will take into account the history of industrial relations in Malta and discuss the Employment & Industrial Relations Act as well as other related subsidiary legislation, with an emphasis on the various novel concepts introduced into Maltese Law as a result of Malta's accession to the EU. The unitwill also delve into the role of the Industrial Tribunal, unions and employers' associations within the industrial relations scene.

Particular emphasis will be made on the practical side of these issues in order that the student will be in a position to appreciate the implications of what will be discussed, to his or her eventual role within an organization.

Study-Unit Aims:

To introduce students to the general principles of employment law as applicable to their future duties as business professionals as well as to increase their appreciation of the issues involved in respect of employment, thus enabling them to be in a position to be able to identify areas within a business organisation which might require addressing and knowing how these areas may be addressed meaningfully within the framework of the law.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to become knowledgeable about the general principles of employment law as applicable to their future duties as business professionals and render them able to appreciate potential problem areas where further professional advice might be warranted, as well as possible ways how to identify areas within a business organisation which might need addressing within the framework of the law.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to to identify potential legal issues connected with particular situations and discuss the implications of those issues in relation to that situations as well as in relation to their wider implications with regards to possible legal liability
