DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will concentrate on the international dimension of sports law, and how international legal principles, such as freedom of movement, competition law and the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union under EU Law is affecting sports today. The study-unit shall analyse international sport dispute resolution, with particular attention to the Court of Arbitration for Sport and the emergence of the Lex Sportiva, regulations of different sports governing bodies, such as FIFA, and their arbitration tribunals, Financial Fair Play, International Match-Fixing, with particular attention given to the Council of Europe Convention against the Manipulation of Sports Results, the Commercial Aspects of international Sports Law, with emphasis on intellectual property law, event management, merchandising, sponsorships and media law and the legal representation of athletes through agency law and regulations, and image rights. Study-unit Aims: - To teach international and commercial sports law to students; - To teach pertinent case law on international and commercial sports law; - To study sports law from an advanced international dimension. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Obtain an understanding on different areas of law, such as public law, international commercial law, European law, international criminal law and contract law, set into the context of the international sports industry; - Comprehend and Analyze how the above areas of law are applied in the field of sport, in order to acquire knowledge on how to draft constitutive documents and commercial documents for sports organisations and how to litigate in the competent international sports tribunals; and - Conduct the necessary research on the subject by knowing were the right sources can be attained and how to interpret such research. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Write about the various laws which regulate sport on an international scale; - Discuss pertinent case law on international sports law; - Analyse the major international laws on sports; - Draft constitutive documents for sports organisations and commercial contracts; - Litigate in the international sporting tribunals such as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Lausanne, Switzerland).
