During his stay in Malta, the historian Dr Roger Vella Bonavita paid a visit to the Department of Archives & Special Collections at the UM Library to view the "Bonavita Papers".
This collection of papers represents the family archive of the Bonavitas - an old and distinguished Maltese family of long standing. Apart from recording everyday life, the archive also serves to shed light on Maltese social, economic, legal and political history most particularly during the 18th and early 19th centuries.
Special Collections manager Mary Samut-Tagliaferro showed Dr Vella Bonavita round the collection and explained the work currently being carried out by herself and her colleague Matthias Ebejer to rehouse the collection prior to relaunching it with an exhibition of some choice works from the collection. The exhibition will be held at Valletta Campus Library and is being timed to coincide with V18.
Dr Vella Bonavita also paid a brief visit to the Melitensia Department where at his behest he was shown a copy of his doctorate thesis entitled: "A gentleman of Cortona: the life and achievement of Capitano Francesco Laparelli da Cortona (1521-1570)".
The Archives & Special Collections Department who hosted Dr Vella Bonavita hopes that this will be the first of many visits to the Library.
