The first Summer School in Maltese Linguistics was held in Malta between 15-26 June 2009. The Summer School was organised by the Institute of Linguistics in collaboration with the Department of Maltese and the Foundation for International Studies.

The summer school provides an opportunity for participants to become acquainted with different aspects of the linguistic structure of Maltese. Participants will also have the possibility of interacting directly with Maltese linguists. The Summer School is aimed primarily at linguists and students of linguistics, though it should also appeal to practitioners working with Maltese, such as translators and language teachers.

The academic programme includes lectures on a wide variety of topics which are intended to provide participants with an overview of both the structure of the language and an appreciation of the linguistically rich context within which Maltese continues to thrive. This is reflected in the programme of the Summer School, which is being organised around three main strands:

  1. The sound system of Maltese;
  2. The Maltese lexicon, grammar and meaning; and
  3. Maltese in context.

Apart from lectures, a number of seminars and in-course excursions, some involving visits to historical sites with linguistic interest, have also been planned as part of the social programme.
