TITLE Maltese Sign Language 1 for Linguistics Students

DESCRIPTION The students are exposed to some basic vocabulary and grammar of Maltese Sign Language. This includes vocabulary related to the family, education, places, clothes, food, buildings etc.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at teaching the student how to better communicate with members of the Deaf Maltese community at a very basic level.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- understand the Deaf person's simple sign-utterances in response;
- appreciate the similarities between the linguistic characteristics of sign language and spoken language.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- sign some basic sign-utterances with confidence about: him/herself, her family, education, where they live and about other places they know, animals, shopping for food and clothes etc;
- communicate with the Maltese Deaf about basic themes.

ADDITIONAL NOTES This study-unit is offered only to Linguistics students; other students can opt for LIN2070.

Note: Competencies A and B below, involve the assessment of receptive and expressive competencies of Maltese Sign Language (LSM) through finger spelling, narrative production and conversation.
