| DESCRIPTION | The students are exposed to some basic vocabulary and grammar of Maltese Sign Language. This includes vocabulary related to the family, education, places, clothes, food, buildings etc. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims at teaching the student how to better communicate with members of the Deaf Maltese community at a very basic level. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - understand the Deaf person's simple sign-utterances in response; - appreciate the similarities between the linguistic characteristics of sign language and spoken language. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - sign some basic sign-utterances with confidence about: him/herself, her family, education, where they live and about other places they know, animals, shopping for food and clothes etc; - communicate with the Maltese Deaf about basic themes.
