DESCRIPTION The unit allows the students to apply the skills and knowledge acquired during their studies to the fulfilment of a specific task. Students are required to undertake a project by which they will produce an original artefact (experiment, product, programme) in an enterprise that provides them with the basic skills required to be able to participate successfully in future projects.

Study-unit Aims

- apply the skills and knowledge acquired to the fulfilment of a specific task;
- acquire the basic skills required to be able to participate successfully in future projects;
- encourage the development and application of original ideas;
- provide knowledge on how to create and apply new designs and apply to a specific task.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- use scientific research methods applied to a specific task;
- produce adequate user documentation relating to a computer program;
- apply theoretical knowledge in a focussed, structured context;
- produce a functioning product (programme, machine, experiment);

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- solve theoretical and practical problems in the context of a specifc task;
- apply one’s initiative to design a practical task to the creation of a product;
- collaborate with others to create a useful product;
- report in detail on the work produced;
- develop basic project management skills;
- identify their personal strengths and critically evaluate one’s work.

The texts relevant to this study unit depend on the topic selected by students, and will be determined in consultation with the Project Advisor.
