| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit constitutes the core of the M.A. Programme in Linguistics. Students will select a research topic which is approved by the supervisor and the Institute of Linguistics board. They will then pursue the research under supervision, culminating in a dissertation of approximately 50,000 words. Study-unit Aims To encourage students to identify scientific questions and seek answers to them through appropriate methods. Learning Outcomes 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Formulate adequate research questions in the domain of Linguistics. 2. Demonstrate a complete and up to date understanding of the state of the art in their chosen research area. 3. Identify the right methodology to address them. 4. Design and execute a plan of research leading to the writing of a report. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Critically appraise existing work in the chosen area of research. 2. Identify gaps in scientific knowledge and address them through appropriate methodologies. 3. Write a clear research report. | ADDITIONAL NOTES | **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners. | ||||||
