Study-Unit Description

CODE LIN5012

TITLE Advanced Research Methods in Linguistics 2

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology

DESCRIPTION Students pursuing an MA in Linguistics will design and execute a preliminary study which is directly related to their chosen research topic. Depending on the domain of inquiry, this may take any one of the following forms (though it is not limited to these forms):
- a pilot study;
- the collection and analysis of a small corpus;
- a preliminary theoretical analysis of selected linguistic phenomena;
- an experimental study.

This will provide further motivation for students to pursue their research independently, while also complementing the work eventually leading up to their MA dissertation.

This unit will involve discussions with the MA supervisor, followed by independent study.

In addition to writing up results, they will also be presented to fellow undergraduate and postgraduate students in a presentation.

Study-unit Aims

- To help students evaluate their research questions by conducting a preliminary study with a methodology appropriate to the topic at hand;
- To provide students with the opportunity to test their hypotheses prior to conducting a larger-scale study for their MA dissertation.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Evaluate preliminary results;
- Use these results to fine-tune the questions addressed by their research study.

2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Critically evaluate the outcomes of a study, whether this is theoretical or empirical;
- Bring the results to bear on a more precise formulation of hypotheses;
- Present research results to an audience.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings

Readings will depend on the student's chosen topic, and will typically be determined through discussions with the MA supervisor.
