DESCRIPTION The study-unit is intended to consolidate postgraduate students’ understanding of Interactional Linguistics by providing them with a thorough grounding in pragmatics and discourse analysis.

Interactional linguistics is the study of language as a communicative resource. When people communicate they produce discourse. The design of their discourse is reflexively related to pragmatic meaning. The study-unit brings critical attention to bear on essential notions in pragmatics and multiple approaches to the study of discourse.

Study-unit Aims:

- to consolidate postgraduate students’ understanding of Interactional Linguistics by providing them with a thorough grounding in pragmatics and discourse analysis.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of meaning as a complex entity with an elaborate pragmatic dimension

- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a wide range of approaches to the study of pragmatic meaning

- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of core discourse analytic principles

- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the broad scope encompassed by Discourse Analysis both as an inter-discipline and as a discipline in its own right

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- produce pragmatically-informed analyses of samples of language use consisting of multiple utterances

- critically compare and contrast pragmatic approaches to the construction of meaning

- critically analyse and seamlessly integrate a variety of discourse analytic studies (papers/chapter-length/book-length) of a broad range of verbal genres and modalities

- critically compare and contrast a selection of approaches to the analysis of discourse
