Profile:

Dr. Marc Kosciejew is a Lecturer and former Head of Department of Library, Information, and Archive Sciences at the University of Malta. He has been published in scholarly and professional journals, lectured in Europe and North America, and presented worldwide from Canada to China at diverse universities, institutions, and events from MIT to the National Archives of Sweden to Malta’s National Book Festival. He is also the winner of ARMA International’s prestigious Britt Literary Award for 2014 for his article on personal data rights. 

In 2017, he was invited to deliver an official keynote response at UNESCO’s co-hosting of the 8th Annual Conference on the New Materialisms at Paris’s UNESCO Headquarters as part of the preparation process for the 2017 World Humanities Conference. 

In 2016/2017 he was appointed by Malta’s Minister for Education and Employment to serve as Chairperson of the Malta Libraries Council (MLC), a government appointed council stipulated in the Malta Libraries Act, 2011, to provide advice to the National Library and the Minister responsible for libraries.

In 2016 he lectured (on documentation science and materiality) at the Tate Modern in London, United Kingdom, as part of the New Materialism Training School, Research Genealogies and Material Practices (COST Action IS1307).

In 2007 he conducted research in North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) on the secretive Communist state’s library system, becoming one of the first English-speakers to present and publish on this specific topic.

Marc is a regular contributor to various international and national publications, including the Times of Malta and The Sunday Times of Malta, the main national newspapers of Malta, where he was also featured in its online series “The Zone”

Marc received his Masters and PhD in Library and Information Science from Western University (formerly the University of Western Ontario) in London, Ontario, Canada. He received his Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History from the University of Toronto (Trinity College). He also holds certificates in Records Management, Information Management, Web Search Strategies, and Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy from the University of Toronto.

His current research interests include the study of documentation, records and information management (RIM), the intersections of society and technology, concepts and practices of information, and the histories of memory institutions and information.
