TITLE Human Information Behaviour

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Cognitive Science

DESCRIPTION This study-unit examines the theoretical foundations associated with human information behaviour. The information seeking process is analysed and models are explored to explain information behaviour. The concept of information literacy will be examined with particular attention given to cognitive and affective issues.

Topics to be covered in the study-unit include:
- Theoretical frameworks for Human Information Behaviour
- Key concepts in Human Information Behaviour
- Models of Human Information Behaviour
- Methods of studying Human Information Behaviour

Study-unit Aims:

- Introduce the foundations of human information behaviour.
- Develop a sound understanding of current trends, approaches, and frameworks in information behaviour and their application in knowledge and information management practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Build a conceptual framework of human-information interaction.
- Discuss theories, models, and paradigms in the study of information seeking behaviour.
- Discuss patterns of information seeking behavior among different communities of users.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Use theories of information behaviour to inform the design of information systems and services.
- Apply methodologies learned to conduct information seeking research and user studies.
