DESCRIPTION This study-unit will use a mixture of in-class lectures and film screenings to expand students’ exposure to diverse films, from a cross-section of genres, traditions and countries. It will take key films as case studies, from which students will gain an understanding of their importance from an aesthetic, critical, audience and market point of view. The course will give students the skills to assess and discuss the qualities of the works, while also strengthening their judgement, through an enhanced understanding of the artform. To this end, the films of contemporary auteurs, such as Kelly Reichardt, and Celine Sciamma, will be discussed, as well as work from South Korea, Lebanon, and India.

Study-Unit Aims:

- Further enhance students' skills in the appreciation and criticism of filmic texts;
- Equip students with the critical vocabulary used in the discussion of film, derived from the following schools of thought: authorship, film genre, psychoanalytical film theory, feminist film theory, and world cinema;
- Give students the opportunity to study a variety of filmic texts and understand the contemporary trends prevalent in film across the globe.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- The critical vocabulary of various schools of thought used in the critical assessment of films, globally;
- The cultural significance of specific films and filmmakers;
- The rich work being produced by filmmakers working within different traditions;
- The current viewing and programming trends in today’s film industry, as well as the significance of certain filmmakers’ work.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Conduct a close analysis of filmic texts and demonstrate competence in writing critically about film;
- Understand, assess, evaluate and interpret a film;
- Understand the current trends in contemporary programming, as well as have a historical understanding of film artistic endeavour.
