DESCRIPTION Art, design and visual communication are central to the modern world, and the study of their history, structure and culture is one of the most stimulating and rewarding ways to understand our society. The study-unit covers the ways society has shaped art, design and culture over the last century and vice versa, and consequentially the role art and design play today. It investigates the key ideas, technologies, cultural and socio-political contexts in western Europe and America that shaped art and design from the late nineteenth century to today. The study-unit helps students to develop a range of critical approaches to visual language and its importance both historically and at the present time.
