| DESCRIPTION | Some students may prefer to write instinctively, especially in a creativity-led programme, but following a structured process of planning, researching and writing can enhance the quality and effectiveness of one's written work. Accordingly, the study-unit focuses on the ways in which being able to think critically about one's own practice and learning is an essential aspect of ongoing professional development. It will initially expose students to various skills in academic writing, including essay writing and the composition of reports, but will then move on to study aspects of form and pitch in reviews and will explore the purposes and styles of reflective writing. In the process, the study-unit provides students with both broad preparation in relevant academic and professional writing skills and the capacity for articulate auto-critique in the practice of the digital arts. Study-Unit Aims: - To enhance students' skills in academic writing at postgraduate level; - To provide the opportunity to students to direct their own sorting out/clarifying process; - To explore students' ongoing process of thinking about their development in relation to their own work; - To consolidate students' recording (description) and reviewing (their own and others') of their work, with scope for close and comparative analysis and evaluation. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the students will have benefitted from the experience of having: - created a learning journal/log and a reflective statement; - investigated and applied the process of reflective and experiential learning. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - stand back and assess work in a more detached light; - solve problems through regular reflection on practice; - employ various writing skills and techniques in reflecting about one's own work.
