DESCRIPTION The unit familiarizes students with the principles underlying the organization of different types of libraries and information units, in substantial detail, and with the different kinds of operations carried out within them. The Maltese scene is contrasted with practice overseas. The study unit furthermore aims to address the question of why a library should have a collection policy. It emphasizes the importance of collection building in libraries and deals with the very practical area of policy development and the construction of a policy statement. It additionally covers even more practical areas of selection, weeding and conservation. The unit covers the main approaches to the selection of sources of information of collection development.

Study-unit Aims:

a) To understand why different kinds of library such as national, academic, public, special, and school libraries exist, and appreciate the role of inter-library cooperation;
b) To appreciate the importance of having a collection development policy.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a) understand the raison d'etre of each type of library;
b) evaluate a library collection.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a) understand the modus operandi of different types of library;
b) plan a systematic approach to collection development.
