DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the concept of information literacy. Principles of information retrieval from e-databases and some print material are discussed in detail. Students are given hands-on practical sessions to familiarize themselves with skills on how to locate, access, store and use information from online and print sources. Furthermore, students gain the knowledge required, as information professionals, to instruct others on how to become information literate.

Study-unit Aims:

a) To expose students to reference sources on different platforms and in diverse formats;
b) To introduce the concept of being information literate.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will:
a) Understand how electronic sources / databases are organized and operate;
b) Gain knowledge on how to retrieve relevant information or literature related to particular areas / topics;
c) Gain knowledge on how to plan, execute and evaluate information literacy sessions.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be:
a) Information literate: knowing how to locate, access, evaluate information from e-sources and print material;
b) Able to instruct patrons to become information literate.
