DESCRIPTION This study-unit will focus upon the specific requirements of school-age children and young adults where libraries and other forms of information centres are concerned. Issues regarding both the type of print and electronic resources which should be made available to such audiences will be delved into. The relation between formal schooling and the utilisation of library resources will also be discussed. The study-unit will also cover the current trends in providing library services which are specifically aimed to the interests and needs of children and young adults.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are to make the students aware of the particular needs that children and young adults have where library material and services are concerned. Such needs will be discussed both within the context of formal schooling as well as outside and beyond that. The present library infrastructure, both locally and abroad will be also be discussed so that students become aware of its strong points as well as its shortcomings where the above-referred to needs are concerned.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate knowledge of the specific services that libraries and information centres should provide to children and young adults both within and outside the formal educational system;
- Compare and contrast the situation in Malta with that in other European countries where such services are concerned;
- Analyse the existing reading material available to children and young adults and assess the extent to which it fulfils their general and specific requirements.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Report upon and assess an existing library service catering for children and young adults in terms of its suitability and effectiveness;
- Describe the requirements for the setting up of a practical and sound library service in a given school or outside school setting for children and young adults, in terms of both collection requirements as well as the physical layout;
- Demonstrate competence in dealing with needs of specific groups, such as those with special needs, both due to physical or environmental realities.
