DESCRIPTION A study-unit intended to familiarize students with verbal and non-verbal techniques and aids used when communicating with others, as well as in public presentations. Students are expected to participate actively, with evaluation feedback from the the other students in the group contributing to the lecture.

The study-unit consists of the presentation and discussion of:
- Issues of Influence: persuasion, propaganda, etc, and issues of of learning and audience reception: styles, delivery methods, etc;
- How to examine needs, objectives, delivery methods, audiences and environment;
- The communicator as medium – small group communication, public speaking, posture, expression, tone, non-verbals, etc. This is one of the most important parts of the unit;
- An introduction to the use of different categories of visuals, audio, presentation apps and other tools to aid presentations;
- The self in communication – body language, speech variations, delivery, etc.
- The contexts of communication – exploring the environments that help or hinder effective personal communications;
- Hindrances to communication – bad self-projection, confidence, socio-emotional factors, etc.
- An in depth study of the use of instructional and presentation media.

Study-Unit Aims:

– To make students aware of innate communication skills and how control can be taken of them;
– To enchance student use of the elements of personal communication;
– To help students prepare better for public speaking assignments and presentations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

– Be aware of natural communication inclinations and how to control them;
– Discern what communication strategies are needed for any given situation;
– Utilise knowledge gained of the influence on communication by issues of persuasion;
– Evaluate communication needs and their solutions.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

– Give presentations with ends that meet the expectations of the intentions;
– Communicate in a more personally-controlled way in face-to-face situations;
– Apply a knowledge of persuasive techniques to personal and public communication;
– Evaluate audiences and their needs, and apply this to communication solutions.
