| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit consists of theory and practice by means of which students are introduced to audio management in studio environments. Students will become familiar with the process of setting up a recording session, setting up the equipment, recording and processing the sound. They will have the basic knowledge needed for recording, editing and mixing voices/voice overs, instruments, bands and ensembles. Students will primarily learn by using equipment themselves, problem solving, and creating full productions for different media genres. Study-Unit Aims: The aim of the study-unit is to explain to students what is Sound. The basics of hearing, sound, frequencies, dB, mono, stereo, phase. They will also learn about the use of Microphones and microphone placement, mixing consoles Ia, principles of mixing, console layout, mixing consoles Ib, using the studio and equalisers. This study-unit also aims to provide students with an opportunity to learn about the dynamics and use of compressors, limiters and gates I, the dynamics and use of compressors, limiters and gates II, mixing consoles IIa sends and subgroups, as well as mixing consoles IIb sends and subgroups. Students will get acclimatised to mastering different media, and be given a history of music production, landmarks of sound engineering, as well as time based effects. They will also work with pitch and time. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Distinguish between different microphone types and their usage, as well as other input sources; - Be knowledgable about sound and sound phenomena like phase, masking, etc. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Record voices and instruments; - Enhance and mix down live performances or multitrack recordings; - Use audio tools like EQ, compression and sound effects; - Manage live (TV/Radio/Sound) studio situations; - Produce audio for TV, CD Radio DVD or Internet; - Work with audio production software; - Use a mixer with subgroups and busses.
