DESCRIPTION The study-unit seeks to introduce students to the world of radio. Essentially this is a medium which lacks visuals and users need to grasp a thorough understanding of the appropriate treatment to convey messages in a clear and concise manner for a medium that is governed by time and not space.

Students enrolled for this study unit enjoy the opportunity of familiarisation visits to a radio studio including practical sessions of addressing microphones.

The sessions will lead students to produce their own short audio-documentary.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To introduce students to the world of audio production (radio);
- To help students understand the importance of creativity in the medium;
- To assist students in grasping the concept of proper scripting for the medium;
- To familiarise students with the domestic law governing broadcasting;
- Hands-on experience inside a studio.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- be aware of the postulates of sound-only (audio) communication;
- be knowledgeable of the appropriate format of radio scripts;
- distinguish between the various genres of scripting for radio.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- prepare different scripts for different treatments;
- identify the relevant legal provision governing specific genres of programming;
- produce a short audio-documentary.
