MSc in Family Medicine Graduation Ceremony - 25 November 2010

Dr Malcolm P Galea, Dr Mohamed Ahmed Salem Rashed and Dr Christopher Scerri were conferred with the degree of Master of Science in Family Medicine at a congregation held in the Jesuits' Church, Valletta on the 25 November 2010. The Department of Family Medicine was represented at the graduation ceremony by Visiting Senior Lecturers Dr Philip Sciortino (coordinator of the MSc course) and Dr Mario R Sammut. Master of Science in Family Medicine - 2010-12

The Master of Science in Family Medicine programme consists of a two-year part-time afternoon course composed of eleven study-units, of which 9 are taught and 2 are research-based (a research proposal and a Master’s dissertation). The taught components comprise Principles and Practice of Family Medicine; Statistics, Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methodology in Primary Care; Evidence Based Medicine & Learning and Teaching in Practice; Sociology and Psychology of Health and Illness; Epidemiology in Family Practice; Managing and Preventing Illness in Family Medicine; Communication Skills; Medical Law and Ethics; and Management, Leadership, Quality & Medical Informatics. Students will undertake a supervised research project on a theme which has to be approved by the Department of Family Medicine. This work will be presented as a 15,000 to 20,000 word dissertation. The course is open to medical practitioners with at least two years of practice experience following attainment of their M.D. degree. Seminar for Community GP Tutors - 23 January 2010

The Department of Family Medicine organised a training seminar on 23 January 2010 at the Hilton Hotel, St Julian's for Specialists in Family Medicine who host 4th year medical students for teaching attachments in their private/government practices. This seminar was a repetition of one held in 2009 for those who could not attend then. Almost 20 community GP tutors participated, with presentations given by Prof. Helen Batty - Department of Family & Community Medicine, University of Toronto; Dr Doreen Cassar - Specialist in Family Medicine; Dr Mario R Sammut - Visiting Senior Lecturer, Department of Family Medicine; and Dr Philip Sciortino - Visiting Senior Lecturer, Department of Family Medicine. The venue and refreshments were kindly sponsored by Novartis Pharma Services - Malta. The photos below show Prof. Batty speaking to the participants.

MSc in Family Medicine Graduation Ceremony - 26 November 2009

Graduates of the first ever MSc Course in Family Medicine were conferred with their degree at a congregation held in the Jesuits' Church, Valletta on the 26 November 2009. These were Dr Andrew Agius, Dr Dominic Agius, Dr Fabrizia Azzopardi, Dr Bjorn M Buhagiar, Dr Christopher Deguara, Dr Maria Felice-Klaumann and Dr Mario Saliba. The Department of Family Medicine was represented at the graduation ceremony by Visiting Senior Lecturers Dr Philip Sciortino (coordinator of the MSc course) and Dr Mario R Sammut. Preventing Dementia - 10 March 2009

The Malta Dementia Society in collaboration with the Department of Pathology, the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Family Medicine of the University of Malta, organised a talk for doctors titled Preventing Dementia by Dr Carmelo Aquilina, Service Director and Consultant (Old Age Psychiatry), Sydney West Area Health Services, New South Wales, Australia.

This talk was held on 10 March 2009 at Medical School Auditorium (Block A level 1) Mater Dei Hospital at 2000hrs. A finger-food reception followed the talk.

  • Questions & Discussion
