Introduction: the Role of a Student Representative

Each Faculty at the University of Malta has student representatives at course level, on Faculty Board as well as on Council and Senate. Student representatives participate and attend Board meetings and other functions and present the students’ voice. Students may contact their representative should they require advice or for the representative to deal with a complaint.

I am currently in my third year of studies as a medical student. Having acted as a class representative in my first two years, I am no stranger to getting students' messages across. I am a strong believer in the values of hard work, determination, and lending a helping hand whenever and however needed.

I graduated in Medicine in 2009 and am reading for an MSc in Pharmacology. I began specialty training in Family Medicine in 2012. I believe that the role of the faculty representative is to voice the concerns of fellow students and help address their needs. I believe in an Educational System that fosters active student participation, which makes our learning experiences, not only an increase in knowledge, but also an experience of deepening personal growth. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns you may have. I am readily available and would be very glad to help.

Having worked with and represented students on a national and European level, I am aware of the importance that students are given a voice to express their opinion in issues which effect them directly. I believe that through discussion, students can also contribute to change, and help improve education. This is one main reason why I chose to represent students during my student years.

I am Abigail Aquilina from Haz-Zebbug. I am a very helpful person, hard working, ambitious, joyful and fun to be around. I consider myself an optimistic and always like to plan things ahead. I am currently studying to become a pharmacist, which is the carrier I've wanted since I was in grade 6. Being a student representative helps me to create a link between students and lecturers and be able to improve certain issues in order to have better and more fruitful educational experience. I believe that this committee also helps the lecturers themselves, since they are having a better picture of what student think. As a student representative, I am willing to help other students and improve the educational experience both for the current students and the future students that will embark in the pharmacy course.

Having always aspired to become an active professional pharmacist, I have sought to seek inspiration by becoming a student representative in the Board of Studies of BSc Pharmaceutical Science. I consider myself as being self-confident and outgoing, yet also reserved. I appreciate the opportunity of being a student representative because I thoroughly believe that through this experience, I will be able to build up new friendships with my fellow classmates and future colleagues.

As a Class and Student Representative, my role is to carry forward any suggestions by the students to the Department of Pharmacy. Through this channel of communication, the students and the department can work together to further perfect the course. Any complaints received are tackled with the utmost discretion and privacy. Usually I communicate with the relevant department member, however if a certain issue cannot be tackled over the phone or by email, a one-on-one meeting would be held.

A better course means better graduates, and better graduates result in better jobs. I, together with the students whom I represent, build our own future so that we may better help others.

I've just started this course and have always been interested in representing fellow students and colleagues. I'm also the class representative of my year. I'm good at listening to people and also at relaying my views concisely and precisely to the relevant people. This makes me quite suited for this kind of role. Students speak to me regarding problems they might be having during coursework, studying etc, and I pass on the information to the relevant people.
