| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will provide a sound understanding of the principles underlying pharmacological research methods and approaches. This study-unit will empower students with a theoretical and practical basis for pursuing pharmacological research using the tools required to engage in this research. Study-unit aims: This study-unit will: - Provide a sound understanding of the principles underlying the various research methodologies in pharmacology; - Explain the use of quantitative and qualitative research methods in pharmacology; - Show when and how different types of models in pharmacological research are used in pharmacology; - Discuss the applications of various methods used in pharmacological research; - Apply statistical approaches in pharmacological research. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of this study-unit, the student will be able to: - Apply quantitative and qualitative research methods in pharmacological research; - Develop methods for pharmacology research design which is clinical-based or laboratory-based research; - Understand how different types of models are used in pharmacological research: in vivo, in vitro models and insilico models: cell systems; whole organ systems; animal models; human models and computer models; - Apply statistical approaches and software applications in pharmacology research. 2. Skills By the end of this study unit, the student will be able to: - Apply principles underlying pharmacological research methods and approaches; - Understand how theoretical approaches in pharmacology research are used in the clinical setting; - Explain how different research tools are used in pursuing different aspects of pharmacological research.
