TITLE Renal Physiology and Haematology

DESCRIPTION Important aspects and fundamental concepts of normal renal function and haematology provide the core material of the unit. Emphasis is placed on the clinical relevance of important physiologic principles.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit aims at providing students in the biomedical sciences with an integrated approach to study of the urinary systems and haematology, hence:
(i) a basic understanding of how the renal system functions in health and disease;
(iii) an introduction to haematology and haemopoeisis and the function of blood cells and other components.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- outline factors determining glomerular filtration and its autoregulation;
- highlight transport mechanisms responsible for NaCl and water reabsorption by the nephron;
- discuss the major hormones regulating NaCl and water reabsorption in the kidneys and their sites of action: renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, atrial natriuretic factor, and antidiuretic hormone;
- describe the role of loop of Henle and vasa recta in production of a dilute and concentrated urine;
- define the effective circulating volume and mechanisms by which body maintains its homeostasis;
- describe the regulation of plasma K+ and Na+ levels by hormones;
- comprehend the principles of acid-base homeostasis;
- comprehend the role of the Blood stem cell in the formation of all blood components;
- be able to identify the function of the blood cells;
- be able to comprehend cascade pathways such as the complement system and coagulation.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- interpret inulin and creatinine clearance to measure glomerular filtration in patients;
- assess patients with renal disease, including oedematous states, disorders of water balances, glomerular diseases, renal failure, ureteric pain, and urinary tract infections;
- interpret normal blood counts;
- identify possible coagulation deficiencies;
- understand the role of the blood cells, compliment system and vascular endothelium in the inflammation.
