DEPARTMENT Physiology and Biochemistry

DESCRIPTION Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes in living organisms. In this study-unit the focus will be on covering the principles of biochemistry that underly dental and oral health and disease. Throughout the unit, emphasis will be placed on the integration of general biochemistry to the field of dentistry.

Study-unit Aims:

To enable students to integrate the principles of general biochemistry to applications in the field of dentistry.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss atomic structure, elements and isotopes and the concept of how isotopes may act as a source of radioactivity.
- Describe the types of chemical bonds.
- Explain the chemical structure.
- Describe the characteristics of biochemlcals such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, nucleic acids, vitamins.
- Describe examples where these classes of biocompounds are relevant to the field of dentistry.
- Describe the synthetic paths for collagen and elastin.
- Describe the synthesis of bone, enamel and dentin.
- Describe the process of blood coagulation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify the components involved in dental and oral health and disease.
- Identify the roles played by these components in dental and oral health and disease.
