DESCRIPTION The unit presents an overview of drug information sources that are used in healthcare. Critical evaluation of literature in a systematic approach is described. The clinical application of statistical tools is put forward. The concepts of ensuring patient safety and legal and ethical implications when responding to drug information requests are explored. Aspects required in the use of evidence-based medical literature, in the retrieval and analysis of information and literature evaluation for formulary development and disease state management policies are discussed. Pharmacovigilance and drug use monitoring processes are described.

Students will be asked to propose models for drug information, pharmacovigilance and clinical trials appraisal as assignments.

Study-unit Aims:

- To present use of literature when handling drug information requests;
- To critically evaluate studies and clinical trials design and reports;
- To identify application of different statistical tests.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Recognize and differentiate different statistical tools used in healthcare research;
- Describe techniques in researching, interpreting and evaluating drug information sources.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Evaluate drug information literature;
- Provide drug and health related information which is targeted to specific needs of healthcare professionals and consumers;
- Design, develop and evaluate educational information targeted at different levels of audience;
- Assess legal and ethical considerations during drug information service provision;
- Develop and manage drug information services in different care settings;
- Develop comparative efficacy reports and health technology assessments;
- Prepare reviews and medication use evaluations.
