TITLE Applied Surgical Anatomy and Physiology

DESCRIPTION This study-unit comprises the study of surgical anatomy with respect to trauma and surgical procedures. It aims to give a background in physiology with respect to disorders in blood, fluids and electrolytes, jaundice, bilirubin and blood sugar control. Study of degenerative neurological and cardiovascular neurological conditions as they impact surgical practice is also included.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to give participants an in-depth anatomical and physiological background for the holistic treatment of surgical disorders.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe the principles of cell metabolism;
- Explain fluid and electrolyte balance including calcium metabolism;
- Discuss cardiovascular homeostasis;
- Describe and apply concepts of pathophysiology of haematopoieses, blood glucose and bilirubin regulation;
- Explain of surgical anatomy , its importance in relation to surgical procedures, trauma, the administration of nerve blocks;
- Discuss the modalities of medical imaging and correlation with anatomical structures in surgery;
- Discuss the importance of neuromuscular control, the implications of brain trauma, degenerative disease and circulatory disease of the nervous system.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Explain blood and biochemical pathophysiological disorders;
- Describe the consequences of renal and cardiovascular malfunction;
- Describe medical imaging with respect to anatomical structures;
- Explain surgical anatomy and its importance with respect to surgical procedures;
- Discuss neurological disorders and their impaction on surgical practice.
