Study-Unit Description

CODE CIS1004

TITLE Computing for Chemists and Pharmacists

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Computer Information Systems

DESCRIPTION This unit gives an introduction to general computing. Its aim is to give students the opportunity to gain practical experience in the use of desktop based software available in most office environments such as spreadsheets, email as well as more advanced data analytic tools.

Most scientific research requires the collection and analysis of data, particularly large volumes of data. Database concepts such as data design and the use of database management systems will be treated.

Advanced data analytic tools, such as those used in spreadsheets e.g. data table functions, formulae, statistical functions, charts and pivot tables in spreadsheet software.

The large volume of diverse data available for research is often underutilised. Data Mining provides many useful techniques to discover knowledge embedded in available data using the power of current computing processing and readily available data mining software.

Concepts in Data Mining will also be introduced as well as the use of readily available data mining.

Basic data embedding concepts like OLE, DDE and their practical use, basic data exchange between different products.

Groupware, Social Networking, Mobile and Smart Wearable applications will also be discussed as these are very important communication and data sharing tools which are used for personal and social purposes but are also important for research, industry and commerce.

The increased use and sharing of computer information systems exposes users and organisations to a number of threats. These will be discussed together with solutions available for the different threats.
