DESCRIPTION This study unit covers Antibiotics.

Lectures:
- Introduction: definitions; historical perspectives; properties of therapeutically useful antibiotics; classification of antibiotics
- Drug combinations, isobolograms
- Fusidanes
- Nitroimidazoles – metronidazole
- Sulphonamides and the diaminopyrimidines
- Aminoglycosides
- Lincosamides
- Macrolides
- Tetracyclines
- Chloramphenicol

Study-unit Aims

These study units are intended to:

1. Outline the properties of some of the major groups of antimicrobial agents together with emphasis on key compounds
2. Introduce the student to the correct uses and indications of such compounds
3. Provide a working knowledge on the modes of action of these compounds
4. Increase awareness of the national and global problems of antimicrobial resistance
5. Provide basic information on how to prevent/mitigate the latter

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Understand the basic pharmacology of antimicrobial agents
2. know the clinical indications of antimicrobial agents
3. understand antibiotic selectivity
4. understand their modes of action
5. appreciate the problems caused by the development of resistance

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

apply the basic knowledge gained on antibiotics to ensure correct clinical usage in chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis, and be able to appreciate the role of the pharmacist as part of a multidisciplinary team, which includes microbiologists, infectious disease physicians, veterinary surgeons, infection control and public health specialists, to curb antibiotic overuse, abuse and misuse
