DESCRIPTION An introduction to the study of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Emphasis is given to the application of biochemistry and molecular biology to the health sciences.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the study-unit the student will understand:

The relationship between cells and biomolecules;
The importance of water as a biosolvent;
The fundamentals of three dimensional structure of macromolecules;
The relationship between structure and function;
Genes, DNA and recombinant technology;
The basis of signalling pathways;
The importance of salient carbohydrates.

The student will also be able to:
Describe the metabolic pathways of glycolysis and TCA cycle.
