DESCRIPTION The unit covers aspects of the economic and social dimesions of medicinal products and of the health services. Aspects of Public Health Policy as these affect the economy and health of the population is presented. Methods of promoting medicinal products in Malta and the European Union, overview of
outcome assessments, accessibility to new technologies and sales are discussed.

Study Unit Aims:

- To approach to features of economics and health economics as they are applicable to pharmaceutical services and medicinal products;
- To reflect on the relevance of pharmacoeconomics in a multifactorial decision making process to plan, evaluate and assess impact of pharmaceutical technologies.

Learning outcomes:

1. Knowledge and understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Appreciate evolvement of public health policies as these affect national economy and health of the population;
• Describe methods used for the assessment of the efficacy and safety of medicines and the economic implications;
• Participate in the conduct of health technology assessments;
• Apply regulations and guidelines in the conduct of the pharmaceutical industry.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

• Evaluate expenses incurred on medicinal products as related to justification of resources;
• Reflect on benefits and risks associated with generic versions of medicines and biosimilar agents;
• Describe impact of pharmacoeconomic assesments for special populations including patients with rare diseases and assessment and use of orphan drugs;
• Contribute to ensuring the sustainability of the National Health System.
