UoM Wind Ensemble Christmas Concert (16 Dec.)

Christmas Concert by the University of Malta Wind Ensemble
As part of the programme Christmas on Campus, the University of Malta Wind Ensemble will present a concert of Christmas-related music at the quadrangle of the University on Wednesday 16 December 2009 at noon. The programme prepared by this newly established Ensemble will include a variety of pieces ranging from Christmas carols to jazz, classical and semi-classical pieces. This Ensemble which runs under the auspices of DegreePlus features 12 of the most outstanding brass, woodwind, and percussion players at the University. DegreePlus is an initiative of the University of Malta sponsored by Bank of Valletta which provides University students with the opportunity to enrich their academic studies with extra skills and experiences that can add value to their knowledge base. Other activities organised by DegreePlus range from voluntary work to sports and are intended to provide the opportunity for one to undertake a more holistic approach to formal education.
This concert on 16 December 2009 will mark the launching of one of the main projects of DegreePlus for this academic year, which project is being worked out in collaboration with academic staff members of the Music Studies Division of the Mediterranean Institute.
The University of Malta Wind Ensemble provides a high quality ensemble experience to wind players drawn from the whole University. It aims at producing exciting and dynamic concert programmes and events. Through its weekly rehearsals under the direction of its musical director Dr Philip Ciantar, a lecturer in music at the University of Malta, students attain skills in the various aspects of ensemble playing. Such rehearsals benefit greatly from sectional coaching conducted by Mr Godfrey Mifsud (woodwind) and Mr Joseph Chircop (brass), both tutors in the DegreePlus music stream. Focus is placed on exploring new literature as well as performing masterworks of the wind ensemble repertoire. Future initiatives by the Ensemble include the performance of students’ compositions, as well as opportunities to students to perform solo pieces. In addition, the Ensemble will continue working to extend its repertoire to works from all eras, styles and places including Maltese art and popular pieces.
The programme that the Ensemble will be presenting in its forthcoming concert should appeal to a wide range of music enthusiasts. Everybody is invited to support this new initiative and to share, through music, the joyful spirit of Christmas.
