Mr Rodrigu Bovingdon, a Maltese-born Australian has recently presented the University of Malta Library with a collection of audio tape recordings covering interviews with an interesting cross section of Maltese men-of-letters, academics, and folk singers, as well as recordings of a number of commemorative literary soirees. The tapes include a complete set of Prof. Ġużè Aquilina's Redifussion interviews with Ninu Cremona, Dun Karm, Ġorġ Pisani, Mgr. P.P. Saydon, Rużar Briffa, Ġużè Delia, Karmenu Vassallo and many others. Other interviews of folkloristic interest had been conducted by folklore scholar Ġużè Cassar Pullicino; while Mr Bovingdon himself added his own set of interviews with Maltese academics.
A scholar of Maltese, literary critic, linguist and author, Mr Bovingdon is a well known figure in Maltese literary circles. For many years he has been a leading promoter of Maltese language and literature among the Maltese community in Australia, where he has pioneered the introduction of instruction classes for the teaching of Maltese, and has co-founded the Maltese Language School of New South Wales and the Society of Writers of Maltese. The presentation to the University Library was presided by Pro-Rector Prof. Alfred J. Vella in the presence of the Director Library Services Mr Anthony Mangion, Director-Designate Mr Kevin J. Ellul, Deputy-Director Ms Joanna Felice, and a number of distinguished guests, including Rev. Prof. Peter Serracino Inglott and Prof. Henry Frendo.
