Call for Papers - Sustainable Energy 2013 (Deadline: 10 Dec.)
The Institute for Sustainable Energy of the University of Malta is organising its annual conference with the participation of European keynote speakers on Tuesday 12 March 2013. It is entitled: Sustainable Energy 2013: The Ise Annual Conference.
The challenges to attain higher energy efficiency performance in buildings and industry are now strongly felt. Likewise, renewable energy actions have been consolidated for the past few years and are expected to increase in 2013. Technologies are now available, which were either expensive or still under development, a few years ago. Meanwhile, other energy solutions are being developed for future implementation beyond the EU 2020 targets for lower carbon emissions, higher energy efficiency and greater penetration of renewable energy.
This conference aims at bringing the latest developments in the energy fields, both locally and internationally, to the attention and knowledge of all interested parties in Malta. The areas of interest cover many topics ranging from buildings, energy efficiency in industry, energy end-use efficiency, efficient energy production, energy policy, renewable energy applications, energy in education, besides others.
This Call for Papers is open to all interested parties, including but not limited to, professional researchers, Masters and Ph.D. students, industry specialists, and others.
The deadline for submitting the abstract is Monday 10 December 2012.
For further details please access the ISE website or send an email to Ing. Charles Yousif or phone: +356 21650675 / 21652249.

FP7 Incentive Scheme – Successful Project Award Scheme
The Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) is introducing a National FP7 Award Scheme to incentivise researchers to participate more actively and effectively in FP7. This scheme which will be funded by the Government of Malta will be introduced in relation to new FP7 contracts for proposals submitted after 1 October 2012.
The scheme is targeted at researchers participating in successfully funded FP7 projects from Malta-based academic institutions, public and private sector organizations, non-governmental organisations and individual researchers. Under this scheme, the rewards are based on 2% - 15% of the total funding obtained by the Maltese participants within successful FP projects. The percentage of the reward depends on the type of project and the applicant’s role within the project. The bonus will be given directly to the researcher, in his/her own personal capacity.
The proposed Scheme will run up to the end of FP7 for successful projects submitted after 1st October 2012 (FP7 2013 Calls for Proposals). The ultimate aim of the bonus scheme is to increase Malta’s participation in the FP7 Programme.
To view the full outline of the bonus scheme and to access the terms and conditions, kindly refer to the Council’s website.
A briefing session to explain the modalities of the Scheme will be organised on Friday 26 October at 1100hrs at MCST’s premises in Kalkara.
For any queries and to attend the briefing session send an email.

Open Educational Resources
The US Embassy is happy to provide information on Open Educational Resources which are available to professors and to students. Access www.coursera.org for more information.
The United States is a world leader in developing Open Educational Resources. This means that users can access the resources at no cost. OER include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge. US higher education institutions are increasingly integrating OER into open and distance education, and new platforms are emerging such as edX, a joint initiative by Harvard and MIT, and Coursera, a private start-up with university partners such as Stanford University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Virginia, and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
Open Courseware (OCW) is a type of OER that makes the material and content of university courses freely accessible via the internet. EdX, Coursera and the other new platforms will go one step beyond much of the existing OCW to include interactive elements such as testing, real-time feedback, student-ranked questions, and collaborative web-based laboratories.
