Course in Integration of Cytogenetics, Microarrays and Massive Sequencing in Biomedical and Clinical Research

This course is being organised by the European School of Genetic Medicine (ESGM), University of Bologna. It will be webcast from the Main Training Centre in Ronzano, Italy from 23 to 27 October 2008.

Participants from Malta are able to attend at the Remote Training Centre (RTC) based at the Medical School, Mater Dei Hospital. Those interested in attending the course are to contact the Malta RTC Director, Dr Isabella Borg.

Partners for CONCERTO Initiative

The Institut de Combustion,Aerothermique, Reactivite et Environment in CNRS, France, request potential partners for an FP7 Energy proposal under the CONCERTO initiative.

The project which is to be demonstated in the Municipality of Soma, will apply an integration of the use of solar energy, biogas and waste heat as renewable energies for sustainability.

Expertise needed: The SOMA project is looking for:

partners with innovative R&D expertise in solar energy technologies, and efficient energy conversion systems that use methane generated from organic waste for electricity
partners that have experience in designing advanced cascaded district heating systems
additional academic partner organisations that are able to provide analyses of the project from an environmental impact and avoided greenhouse emissions point of view
associate communities, either local or interna! tional that will be responsible to disseminate the results of the Soma project to other interested communities in sustainable development.

Scholarships in the Federal Republic of Germany 2009/2010
(for Maltese citizens only)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is offering scholarships covering the period of the academic year 2009/2010.

The offer comprises:

Research grants for doctoral candidates and young academics and scientists. These are open to excellently-qualified university graduates who hold a Diploma of Master’s degree at the time they commence the grant-supported research and, in exceptional cases, graduates holding a Bachelor’s degree or already holding a doctorate/PhD (Post-docs). Research Grants for applicants from medical fields. Under its ‘research grants’ programme the DAAD also funds study and research stays completed in Germany by young scientists (including from fields such as Human Medicine, Dental Medicine, Veterinary Medicine). Applicants must have completed at least 7 years of medical training with a university degree. They must also hold an unconditional licence to practise medicine in their home country. (1 DAAD)
Study scholarships for graduates of all disciplines. These are open to excellently qualified graduates who, at the lateset when they commence their scholarship-supported studies, hold a first degree (Bachelor’s Diploma or comparable academic degree). No more than six years should generally have passed between the time when they gained their degree and the time of this application. (2 DAAD)
Scholarships for research projects for former beneficiaries of DAAD one-year scholarships. This scholarship should have expired and the applicant returned to Malta at least three years ago. Applicants must have a detailed research project. (3 DAAD)
Post-gradutate study scholarships in the fields of Fine Art, Design and Film; Field of Music; Drama, Direction, Dance and Choreography. Scholarships for Artists in the field of Fine Art, Design, Film, Music and Architecture as well as Drama, Direction, Dance and Choreography (a) Study Scholarships and (b) Study visits for Academics. (4 DAAD)
University summer courses offered in Germany for university students who have completed successfully at least two years university in any discipline. These run for at least 18 days with a minimum of 25 hours of teaching per week. Applicants must have a very good knowledge of the German language and a minimum age at the time of starting the funded stay is 19 years. (5 DAAD)
Study Vists/Study Seminars and Practicals in Germany by groups of students who are fully matriculated in their third semester (2nd year) or higher headed by a university lecturer . The knowledge of the German language is desirable/recommended. The size of the group should be not less than 10 and not more than 15 persons including the university lecturer. Study visits of not less than 7 days and funding is available for a maximum of 12 days. (6 DAAD)
Research stays for University Academics and Scientists. These are open to excellently-qualified academics and scientists who should generally hold a doctorate/PhD. All applicants must be working in higher education or at a research institute. Applicants must have a detailed research project. (7 DAAD)
Practical Traineeships of Natural and Technical Sciences, Agriculture and Forestry are arranged by the International Association for Exchange of Studens for Technical Experience (IAESTE). Further information is also available on their website (8 DAAD)

It is essential that candidates first obtain the necessary information, regarding their chosen field of study and are expected to have made steps towards securing acceptance from an academic supervisor at the German host institution at the time of application. Also they are to confirm their qualifications at the German Embassy, Il-Piazetta, Sliema before submitting their application. Further information can be obtained on www.daad.de.

Applicants are to apply through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Scholarship portal. Kindly note that this portal requires e-ID certification. E-ID registration details may be obtained from here.

Alternatively application forms are available from the Ministry’s own website. These are to be submitted to the Scholarships Section at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Palazzo Parisio, Merchants Street, Valletta, from 0800hrs to 1200hrs. Closing date for these scholarships is by not later than noon of Tuesday 30 September 2008.

Successful candidates may be required to enter into a contract to serve the Government or the Private Sector of Malta upon completion.

Applications from Government and Parastatal employees and from the Private Sector will not be considered unless recommended by their Head of Department/Employer respectively.

Late applications will not be considered.

The Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University invites applications for residential fellowships for the academic year 2009-2010. Applications will be considered from tenured and tenure-track faculty, and postdoctoral scholars from the U.S. and foreign universities. Candidates may apply as individuals or as small groups.

Fellowships are offered in a number of interdisciplinary areas, including:

Gendered Innovations in Knowledge. While much has been written on women in science and engineering, especially the difficulty of recruiting and retaining women in these areas, the challenge now is to integrate the insights of gender studies into scientific theory and practice. We welcome research proposals that address how gender analysis, when turned to science and engineering, can profoundly enhance human knowledge. The key questions are: How has gender analysis sparked creativity by opening new questions for future research? How can employing gender as a tool of analysis lead to new knowledge? To better understand what we are looking for, see Londa Schiebinger, Gendered Innovations in Science and Engineering (Stanford University Press, 2008) and Has Feminism Changed Science? Clustering in Scientific Subfields. Women tend to cluster in particular sciences, such as the life sciences, and in particular subfields of science or engineering (for example, there are many more women in civil than in electrical engineering). We welcome applications that investigate what it is about particular fields that attract or repel women.
Title IX in Science and Engineering. Title IX applies to all areas of federally-funded education, including science and engineering. Researchers working on the use of Title IX, in particular identifying criteria for assessing institutional compliance with Title IX, in the sciences are invited to apply.
Women in "Big Science".
Work culture and work-life balance in professional life, especially in the sciences.
Division of Household Labor. It is well known that women tend to undertake more household labor than men in heterosexual relationships, even when they work in full-time paid employment. We are interested in new approaches to these issues, rather than a restatement of existing conclusions.

Fellows must be in residence at the Clayman Institute for the duration of their fellowship. Fellowship stipends range from $36,000 for postdoctoral scholars to $60,000 for senior faculty. Applications for one, two or three quarters will be considered.
