IT Services is pleased to announce the availability of wireless access at the Humanities B Building (FEMA) and P.P. Saydon Lecture Theatre (Arts Lecture Theatre). University staff and students will now be able to use Wi-Fi throughout these buildings.

More information about other Wi-Fi hotspot locations and instructions on how to connect to IT Services Wireless Hotspots is available.

University Football Skills-4-Kids (Jul. - Sept. 2013)

Malta University Sports & Leisure is pleased to announce the launch of University Football Skills-4-Kids, a football summer school which will run for the first time from July to September 2013 (10 weeks). Football sessions will be held twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays between 1830hrs and 1945hrs at the University 5/7-a-side football pitches. No sessions will be held on Tuesday 13 and Friday 16 August.

University Football Skills-4-Kids is open to boys and girls aged between 10 and 12 years, and the programme will focus on development of football skills and related fun games. Sessions will be organised by a qualified football coach.

The fee for the programme is €65 per child, which includes a free t-shirt and certificate. A 20% discount will be offered for the second sibling booked, while a 10% discount will be offered for all bookings received before 31 May 2013.

Places are limited so early booking is advisable.

The introduction of a new sub-category of applications

The Work Resources Fund Committee for Support Staff was contacted by the ‘University of Malta Green Travel Plan Committee’ asking the WRFC to consider allowing support staff to apply for refunds in connection with purchases of bicycles and cycling equipment in order to promote cycling as a means of transport to and from the University.

After carefully discussing this request, the Committee agreed to introduce a new sub-category of applications for the ‘Purchase of an Adult Bicycle & Cycling Equipment’, allocating the sum of €235 for the purchase of one adult bicycle and €120 for cycling equipment. The application must also be supported by a quotation. In any one year, applications will only be considered for one section, that is, either in connection with the adult bicycle or the cycling equipment.

These applications will be a sub-category of the Computer and Other Equipment Category; therefore, members of staff who benefited from a refund for the purchase of a computer may not apply for the purchase of an adult bicycle unless 3 years have elapsed from such an approval. In the same manner, if a member of staff benefits from a refund of an adult bicycle, he/she may not apply for a refund in connection with the purchase of a computer unless 3 years have elapsed.

Call for Proposals for a Science Carnival Parade

Science in the City, 2013

Deadline: 27 May
Evaluation: 28 – 31 May
Notification: First week of June

Theme: Better Living

Ever thought of designing a carnival mask with a difference? How about using your skills to help promote the relevance of science and art in today’s world? Your masterpireces will be appreciated by over 12,000 people on our big night 27 September 2013 in Valletta we will also display the maskri on 5 October, during Notte Bianca. Science in the City is looking for Carnival makers to send in their proposals.

Who can apply?
All Valletta carnival participants who work within an organisation or/as an individual.

What we want from you by 27 May 2013
Sketches of:
Maskri isolati (isolated masks) measuring between 6 X 6 feet up to 8 x 8 feet
or
a set of 5 maskri grotteski (Grotesque Set of Masks) measuring a diameter of around 4 feet. Masks are to be lifted and carried by mask bearers throughout the parade.

Interpreting the Theme
Better Living refers to how science in the fields of Health, Technology, Medicine, Engineering, Environmental sciences and so on, already has or can improve our lives. We are looking for any images which reflect this theme.

Some ideas:
•   How will our lives be in the future?
•   How has science affected our lives?
•   Better living for us, but what about our environment?
Any ideas that have a degree of interactivity will be reviewed favourably by the evaluating team.
We accept all Science-related ideas within the better living theme.

Some concrete examples:
•   Faces of Famous Scientists
•   A giant fluorescent brain being studied by little people (scientists)
•   A book being transformed into an e-book reader
•   A man made out of pills
•   Sport Science
•   A human on Mars with the Maltese flag (or a small human settlement)
•   A DNA double helix
•   A baby with hair like Einstein

Values behind events: Science, art, creativity, technology, education, entertainment, quality, interactive, engagement between people.

Funding
The chosen submissions will eventually receive a subsidy of:
Set of 5 masks - €1,000 which covers:
•   Any expenses related to the design, construction, presentation, transportation, participation and masks bearers allowance.

Maskri Izolati - €250 which covers:
•   Any expenses related to the design, construction, presentation, transportation, participation and handling of the same during the defile allowance.

Items participating in this event will become property of the organisers after the event of the 27th day of September.

Judged by the Science in the City Consortium

Main Library – Extended Opening Hours

The Library will be extending its opening hours for the examination period Thursday 2 May 2013 to Friday 14 June 2013.

Study Halls on Level II and Level III of the Main Library will open on:

Mondays to Fridays from 09:00hrs – 23:00hrs
Saturdays from 09:00hrs – 16:45hrs
Sundays and Public Holidays from 09:00hrs – 12:15hrs

It should be noted that the Circulation Desk, Melitensia, Periodicals, Reference and Short Loans Departments will not open during the extended hours. However students are still able to:

Study and carry out research
Seek assistance from Library personnel
Access books and online journals

As from this year payment of work resources funds will be made by direct credit instead of by cheque. Therefore, support staff whose salary is directly credited to their bank account, will likewise be credited with reimbursement of work resources funds. Others whose salary is paid by cheque will continue to be reimbursed for work resources funds in the same way as before.

Lost and Found

The Reception Desk handles lost and found items on campus such as keys, eyeglasses, pendrives and other personal property.

Items found on Campus can be brought to the Reception Desk at the Administration Building.

If you have lost an item call or visit the Reception Desk to check if your property has been recovered; you must be able to specifically identify the lost item and where you believe you lost it. In order to retrieve a lost item you must present a valid ID Card. All found items are locked up and cannot be recovered after office hours.

Submission of Externally Funded Project Proposals

Academic members of staff wishing to participate in project proposals under any externally funded schemes (including FP7, DG Calls and Lifelong Learning Programme amongst others) are kindly requested to contact Project Support Team before any submission is made. Project documents, including a copy of the proposal and budget breakdown, are to be sent by email to the Project Support Team.

It is important to note that this also applies for proposals being submitted electronically which do not require endorsement by the legal representative at proposal stage. It is necessary to ensure that all the technical, financial and legal implications of participating in such projects are carefully considered before committing the University of Malta.

University Parking Permits

Now that all parking permits are issued, the Precincts Office would like to remind all parking permit holders that yellow permits are to be used only in yellow parking bays, whilst white permits are to be used only in white parking bays. All permits are to hang visibly from the rear view mirror. This information is found on all permits, and if these rules are not abided to, vehicles are subject to clamping at all times.

How to Obtain a Temporary Parking Permit
Departments requesting a temporary parking permit for their visitors (including visiting teaching staff) are to provide an authorisation letter on the Departmental letterhead and signed by the Head of Department. The letter should be shown at the guard room of the Main University Entrance (Mater Dei side). On presentation of letter, visitors will be given a temporary parking permit, which has to be returned on their way out.

Recyclable Waste - Paper/Board

Kindly be informed that there are now new regulations on how to dispose of recyclable waste in the Wasteserv facilities.

Due to this, collection of paper, files, books, and all that falls under the category of Paper/Board, should be gathered and prepared in boxes, packs or bags of a reasonable and manageable size (approximately 30 to 40cm2) in order to avoid handling problems.
