The Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering announces that as from 9 October 2008 the faculty is operating under its new name of Faculty for the Built Environment.

Any mention of the Faculty, on websites and publications, is to be updated accordingly.

Calendar Update 2008/2009

The University Calendar has recently been updated and this publication is shortly to go to print. Members of Staff are asked to check their entry in the online Calendar and to send an email with the subject: Calendar update, should any changes be required. New members of staff who are as yet unlisted should email their name, qualifications, grade & location.

With the start of the academic year the Main Library on campus has opened its newly refurbished second floor, where spaces have been reconfigured to create a congenial environment, in line with fresh thinking about changing user needs. The area now offers flexible study spaces for group and individual work, with comfortable furnishings and a considerable investment in hardware. This venture forms part of a general upgrading of the Library and seeks to bring together, for the convenience of users, the Library’s print collection, its growing range of electronic resources, and the extensive facilities of the University IT Services unit.

University Web Redevelopment Project - Update 16

The websites of the following departments have been migrated to the Web Content Management System (CMS) adopting the new University web templates:

Academic Programmes Quality & Resources Unit
Faculty of Arts
Department of Classics & Archaeology
Department of French
Department of History
Department of Translation & Interpreting Studies

Other University departments are currently being assisted by IT Services to migrate their websites to the Web CMS. More information about the Web Redevelopment Project is available here.

Minute Taking & Writing Course

A training programme in Minute Taking & Writing will be held later on this year for administrative staff of the University of Malta.

The programme consists of five 2-hour sessions, which will be spread over five weeks and will be held on campus during office hours. One group will consist of not more than 15 participants so as to ensure interactive participation.

The following topics will be covered during the training programme:

using the right vocabulary
preparation before the meeting
note taking and summarising, and
presentation of minutes and agenda.

A minute writing workshop will also be carried out.

Members of staff who are interested to attend are to fill in the form available here and send it to Kristina Micallef by not later than Monday 17 October 2008.

Training on the Filing System of the Administration & Students' Files

Once again the Office for Human Resources Management & Development, in conjunction with the Registry Office, is organising three training sessions of 2 hours each on the 'Filing System of the Administration and Students' Files'. These will be held for recently recruited administrative staff, working throughout the various sections of the University of Malta.

The aim of these short training sessions is to provide members of staff with information on the role of the Registry Office, and guidance on how to efficiently carry out the filing of documents and keeping records of the movement of files. The sessions will also guide participants on the 'redding' system of documents and the 'putting away' procedure of files. Visits to the Archives will also take place. Training sessions will be held on 22, 27 and 29 October 2008 at the Registry Office in small groups of seven participants each.

Members of staff will be informed of the dates by email. Any other information regarding these training sessions may be obtained by contacting Kristina.

Departmental Stamp for Mail

All staff are to ensure that any mail requiring postage stamps either locally or overseas has the departmental stamp in the bottom left hand corner of the envelope.

This is so the Communications & Alumni Relations Office may bill postage costs to the relevant department at the end of each billing period. Unstamped mail will be opened and returned to the sender for stamping.

Library Orientation Tours

The University Library provides orientation tours designed especially for first year students. The tours are offered at 0900hrs, 1000hrs, 1100hrs, and 1400hrs everyday throughout the month of October. If you would like to attend, come by the Reference Department of the University Library and reserve a place for a 40-minute walking tour. We will point out the important service points and provide information of the Library's book and journal collections.

Please note that waste from outside the University is not to be deposited in the skips on campus since the litter space available is limited. Moreover, when the facilities are full, no further material is to be deposited outside the bins and skips. Facilities are monitored and emptied regularly.

Temporary Parking Permit

The following is the procedure to obtain a temporary parking permit:

Departments requesting a temporary parking permit for their visitors (including visiting teaching staff) are to provide an authorization letter on the Departmental letterhead and signed by the Head of Department. The letter should be shown at the guard room of the Main University Entrance (Mater Dei side). On presentation of letter, visitors will be given a temporary parking permit, which has to be returned on their way out.
