The Melitensia Department, in collaboration with the Periodicals Department of the University of Malta Library has set up an exhibition of Maltese journals. The exhibits on display date back to the 19th century. They have been carefully chosen not only to give a flavour of the past but also to give exposure to the continuously growing collection of Maltese journals housed in the Melitensia Department. The oldest journal on display is from the Maltese Language category, Uard u Zahar, dating back to the year 1865. It eventually stopped being published in 1870.
The exhibition, by the name of Wirja ta’ Ġurnali Maltin, also includes Maltese journals on several aspects of society like religion, leisure, law, commerce, Maltese history, Maltese language, nature, architecture and engineering. The intention of this exhibition is to give visitors a broad idea of the various Maltese journal subjects available at the Melitensia Department.
Wirja ta’ Ġurnali Maltin may be found in the University Library foyer and is open to all those interested in Melitensia material. The public can visit the exhibition during the Library’s opening hours: Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 20:00 and on Saturdays from 09:00 to 12:15.
