Art in Architecture presents A Q U A an exhibition project of art installations produced by final year students of the B.Sc. in Built Environment Studies responding to Creative Interfaces in Collage.
In this art-based project students of architecture investigate collage, navigating the transitions between two-dimensional practice and three-dimensional assemblage through tactile, digital and spatial artistic research. This involves explorative and experimental thinking in probing the “space” between art and architecture to investigate concepts and materials resulting in challenging outcomes responding spatially to an exhibition site.
A Q U A, this year’s edition of Art in Architecture has been produced in collaboration with Balzan Local Council, and will be sited in a recreational public garden environment in the village of Balzan. This has culminated in eight exciting artistic collaborations created by forty architecture students exploring “connective flows” combining assemblage, light and water interactively. This concept echoes the significant historic, urban and social contexts inspired by the garden and the Balzan locality known for its aqueducts, old railway and profusion of citrus trees.
A Q U A will be launched on Friday 3 June as part of the Arts and Music Festival in Balzan square and recreational garden from 20:30 onwards. Following the launch event, the artworks will remain on display until the end of June.
This exhibition has been realised in collaboration with the Balzan Local Council and the generous support of Perit Daniel Muscat, Council Member responsible for Culture, and Dr Ian Spiteri, Mayor of Balzan, as well as the Malta Tourism Authority and the Valletta 2018 Foundation.
Art in Architecture is a project developed and led by Ruth Bianco, artist and senior lecturer, to explore the creative interface and interactions between contemporary processes in fine art and architecture through artistic research, outcomes and exhibition.
