Duration: 3 June - 7 October, 2016
Venue: University of Malta Library
Currently on view at the University of Malta Library is an exhibition of documents, illustrations and writings by personalities associated with the Irish 1916 Rising drawn from the Library’s own David Elyan Collection housed in the Archives & Special Collections Department.
The exhibition commemorates the centenary of the 1916 Rising when a group of Irish nationalists together with their followers staged a failed rebellion against the British government in Ireland and proclaimed the establishment of the Irish Republic. Among the writings covered in the exhibition are those of: Pádraig Henry Pearse, Seán O'Casey, Joseph Mary Plunkett, Thomas MacDonagh, and Sir Roger Casement.
Exhibition curator H.E. the Ambassador of Ireland to Malta Mr Pádraig MacCoscair opened the exhibition and gave a short speech on the significance of the 1916 Rising, sometimes referred to as the Easter Rising, in Irish history. Mr David Elyan was also present for the occasion and spoke about the Anglo-Irish collection of literary works that bears his name and from which the items for this exhibition were selected. Refreshments were later served in the board-room.
The exhibition is open to the public during library opening hours.
