The Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy, in collaboration with the Astronomical Society of Malta, is organising an observation night event on the day of the partial lunar eclipse that will be visible from Malta during moonrise on 7 August. The event is being organised at Aħrax tal-Mellieħa, close to the Immaculate Conception Chapel.
Members of the Institute and of the Astronomical Society will be on site to guide all those attending. Telescopes will be set up for all those attending to use, however the partial eclipse itself, for which the maximum will be at 20:20 local time, is easily visible with the naked eye. Later on in the night, we will be observing the planets Jupiter and Saturn as well as some nebulae and star clusters.
Lecturers and students from the Institute will be present on site to speak to prospective students about their research areas within the Institute. Amateur astronomers from within the Astronomical Society will also be available to assist all those interested in starting out in amateur astronomy.
